The Commissioners-designate hearings in 2024

6 Nov 2024 | News

As part of the Citizens Take Over Europe coalition, Alliance4Europe delivered a Democratic Manifesto following the 2024 EU elections. The manifesto serves to provide solutions to how to manage the EU’s democratic deficits.

From November 4th to November 12th 2024, the Commissioner-designates, selected by President-elect Ursula von der Leyen, will undergo thorough hearings before the European Parliament. This is a critical moment in European governance, where Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will evaluate whether the candidates have the vision, expertise, and skills necessary to lead Europe through complex global challenges. After the hearings, Parliament will vote to approve or reject the European Commission during a plenary session.

The coalition now expects the MEPs and Commissioners-designates to address critical questions on democracy during the hearings. Also, MEPs challenge the designates on democracy, reform and digitalization.

Our Questions to the Commissioner-Designates

Our Expectations and Objectives

Moving forward, we have high expectations for the portfolios addressing democracy, reform, enlargement and digitalization.

Our objective is for the new Commission to address these questions with solutions that strengthen and protect European Democracy – by placing citizens at the centre – and that produce actionable steps towards treaty reform.

Concrete initiatives — such as establishing permanent people’s assemblies and strengthening the European Citizens’ Initiative – will create lasting connections between citizens,  civil society and the EU. Therefore, we hope the next generation of Commissioners will remain united and committed to our objectives, for the sake of citizens.

Now is the time to champion real democratic change.
